You went on honeymoon with your new husband (or wife) and returned home as Mr & Mrs (or Mr & Mr or Mrs & Mrs). The formal marriage certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages arrives but your name has not been changed.
But what to do next?
No one in your world, except for those at the wedding, knows about your change of name, or rather, that you intend to change your name. The bank doesn’t know, your superannuation fund doesn’t know and the ATO certainly does not know. And your passport and driver’s licence are still in the “old” name.
There is no right or wrong time to change your name. We have noticed 3 common triggers to get the process started:
- Just after marriage
- Planning to start a family
- When your child starts school
