How to change name on your driver’s licence
Blog Updated: 6 April 2021
At NamesPlus, we consider that there are 2 important IDs for your new name: Passport and Driver’s Licence.
We are aware that digital ID is gaining in popularity but typically it is the Driver’s Licence that you will provide to a Post Office when picking up a parcel, to the bank or to the nice policeman who knocks at your car window.
Driver licences are managed on a state basis and, unfortunately, some different rules apply.
Our Tip: Make your driver’s licence one of the first documents to change as you can then use your updated licence to prove your name has changed when dealing with other companies.
Key points for changing your name on your driver’s licence
A summary of key points for all licensing centres:
- The key identity requirements to support your new name are:
- Marriage Certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages;
- Change of Name Certificate issued by Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages;
- Decree Nisi or Absolute Divorce Order showing the name you are changing back to.
We recommend that you take the original certificate.
- Download a copy of a Change of Name Form (or similar, different states give the forms different titles).
As each state has its own licensing centres, called by different names in each state, you need to search for the licensing centre in your state and download a copy of the change of name form and complete.
- Attend in person at a registry or service centre.
Take your current driver’s licence. This is important.
Some states may allow you to process the application through a local participating Australia Post Outlet. Some states may allow you to process over the phone if you meet all criteria or even by email/mail. You will need to check on the relevant licensing centre website. Attending a centre, if convenient, is the easiest option.
- Some states may ask for other supporting evidence such as a Medicare card or credit/debit card.
This is to check your new signature, so be prepared.
- Most states do not charge a fee for changing your name and issuing you with a new licence.
